The 32 year old, English artiste has gained much local fame after a recent charity concert. Adanna Jamila , English by birth, has lived in Zimbabwe since the age of 23, when she arrived here with a work visa. She found love, in the form of Kenneth Omonyi, when she was offered a temporary work contract with the drinks company that employs him. They struck up a friendship and were soon engaged. Kenneth says it was her musical abilities that attracted him first. “We worked together and she invited me to a charity concert she was playing in. I saw her playing a song she wrote, when she performed. I thought she was very talented and very beautiful. That concert is now a yearly event in our village and we help the poorer families to set up cooperatives and build schools.” Kenneth, 40, is also musically inclined, but he stays away from his wife’s limelight; only performing with her under special circumstances. The couple have not yet had children but are considering adoption in the future.

Adanna Jamila Abubakar Omonyi began playing the guitar when her father bought her one as a Christmas gift as a five year old. “I took to it straight away, apparently,” she said recently. Her first foray into the world of African music stemmed from her research, conducted during her first visit to the country. She heard the Djembe drums and was captivated by their sound and reverberation. Adanna Jamila began writing African style music and a fusion blend of Afro-European tunes to please the local crowds. Her new CD will be available in local stores soon.
